NaBloPoMo Day 13 – SCA

I attended my first SCA (Society for Creative Anachronisms) event yesterday. It was so much fun!  I went with a fairly simple costume since I wasn’t yet sure how deeply I wanted to delve into medieval finery. I wore a plain-colored under dress with a purple tee-shirt style dress that I already owned. So I was only out about 5 bucks total lol.

The event I went to was The Known World Fiber Arts Symposium. There were fiber art related classes all day long, which was awesome because I had the opportunity to learn some entirely new skills AND the classes were free with only a $1-$5 fee for materials.

I took a class on Nalbinding, Total Beginner Level Embroidery, and Beginner Level Card Weaving. The card weaving class I mainly took to hear the educational portion and to look through the books the woman had brought with her. My friend Cera already got me started on card weaving recently. The class, however, just solidified my interest in it. It’s something I definitely want to continue to pursue. Plus, all of these things are period, meaning the resulting objects made from these crafts existed between 600-1600AD and therefore I can use them during SCA events.

The embroidery was fairly easy as well, so I may pick that up from time to time. I don’t know how hardcore I will be with it since I already have knitting, crochet, and weaving, plus the silk dyeing and such.

I was totally wiped by the time I got home, and had fallen asleep in the car on the 2 hour ride back to CR. I’m looking forward to my next event, which probably won’t be until next year, since we don’t have many winter events here in the Kingdom of Calontir.
